5th-8th Grade

Classical Education
In the "logic" stage of development, students naturally begin to question, "Why?" During the middle school years, children begin to think independently and often develop a propensity for argument. Classical education teaches children in the logic stage to think and analyze critically and to argue well by arranging facts into organized statements and arguments. The study of formal logic helps students understand the fundamentals of a good argument. Practice in making written and oral arguments helps to further develop these skills.

Reading & Writing
Students read classic literature and literature related to history topics. The writing curriculum we use is Institute of Excellence in Writing, where students learn the art of using literary elements and stylizing techniques in their writing.

Grammar & Vocabulary
We use Shurley English, and Classical Roots Vocabulary.
Latin
Up through middle school, students continue to learn basics of Latin language using Latin for Children or Lingua Latina.
Logic
Middle school students learn Logic using Thinking Toolbox & The Fallacy Detective.
Literature
One key to a classical education is an exposure to rich literature. 6th-8th graders continue their literary journey with daily readings from unabridged classic literature that emphasizes Godly character, promotes rich vocabulary and literary structure, and deepens a love for literature.
Mathematics
ELC mainly uses Horizons Math through 7th grade then moves into Saxon Math for 8th. For supplemental math, we use Singapore Math. Horizons math uses a spiral-learning method to help students master concepts through introducing, reviewing, and reinforcing specific skills. Saxon math prepares students for the rigorous demands of higher level mathematics. Singapore Math challenges our students to apply math skills in a different way.
Science
Our students have been using our favorite science curriculum: Apologia or The Good & the Beautiful with supplemental activities and field trips.

History & Geography
Our history curriculum is excellent and trustworthy! Students delve into a literature-rich survey of world history using Veritas Press: Pages of History Students study world geography using Memoria Press. We study US History using The Tuttle Twins' America's History or IEW US History themed writing program with supplemental literature.

Economics & Political Science
Encouraging critical thinking, we introduce students to fundamental principles of liberty using Tuttle Twins books.
