2nd - 4th Grade

Classical Education
One way ELC implements the classical approach to learning is through the Memory Period. In this developmental stage of learning, teachers begin each day with memory work (i.e., Latin, poems, quotes, spelling/phonics rules, and more) Using engaging songs, chants, and call-outs students go over material on a daily basis enabling them to learn valuable memory skills in a fun and engaging way.
Reading, Writing & Cursive Handwriting
Students practice reading fluency using leveled readers and selections from our classroom library. We have a rich collection of quality literature for children to enjoy. We teach phonics using Horizons or IEW Spelling Zoo. For writing we use Institute for Excellence in Writing. We devote daily practice to handwriting in cursive as well as printing.
Grammar
We nurture a love of the English language, along with an understanding of how it's correctly used. We help students learn how to break down sentences and identify the parts of speech using Shurley English.
Literature
One key to a classical education is an exposure to rich literature. 1st-5th graders continue their journey into classical literature with daily readings from unabridged classic literature that emphasizes Godly character, promotes rich vocabulary and literary structure, and deepens a love for literature.
Mathematics
ELC mainly uses Horizons Math because it uses a spiral-learning method to help students master concepts through introducing, reviewing, and reinforcing specific skills. As a supplement, we use Singapore Math to challenge students to apply math skills in a different way.
Science
Science curriculum by Apologia or The Good & the Beautiful with supplemental activities and field trips.
Latin
Students are introduced to Latin using Songschool Latin.

American & Ancient History & Geography
Children learn geography and an appreciation of our American heritage through Geography Songs, maps, and literature. Among other selected books, our students enjoy the Beautiful Feet books and the Tuttle Twins US History. Students learn ancient history using Story of the World: History for the Classical Child.
